Air touch is one of those techniques that sounds like marketing until you see it done. It is not a product or a brand — it is a way of choosing which hairs get lightened, using a hairdryer.
Air touch starts at $285 at Neelo Luxe Studio, compared with $350 for classic balayage. It produces the softest root transition of any lightening technique, and it suits fine hair particularly well.
What actually happens
The colourist takes a section of hair, holds it up, and blows air through it with a dryer. The shorter, finer, newer hairs — baby hairs and regrowth — lift away and fall out of the section. What stays in the hand is only the longer, stronger strands.
Lightener is then applied to that remaining hair only. Everything the air removed stays your natural colour.
That is the whole idea, and it explains the result. Because the fine hairs closest to the scalp are never lightened, there is no hard line where colour begins — the transition is diffused through hair that is naturally darker. It grows out as a gradient rather than a stripe.
Air touch vs. balayage vs. foils
| Air touch | Balayage | Foil highlights | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How sections are chosen | Air removes short hairs first | Painted freehand by eye | Woven with a comb |
| Root transition | Softest | Soft | Defined |
| Overall lightness | Subtle, blended | Moderate, dimensional | Brightest, most uniform |
| Appointment length | Longest | Long | Moderate |
| From | $285 | $350 | $250 full / $100 partial |
Worth noting the price order surprises people: air touch is a longer appointment than balayage but starts lower, because the amount of hair actually being lightened is smaller.
Who it suits
- Fine hair. Removing the finest strands before lightening means the most fragile hair on your head never meets the product. For anyone whose hair does not tolerate bleach well, this is the significant part.
- People who hate a regrowth line. If the thing you dislike about colour is the moment the roots announce themselves, this is the technique built to solve exactly that.
- Anyone stretching time between appointments. A gradient grows out for a long time before it reads as “needing doing”.
- Natural-looking results. Because the hairs left un-lightened are the ones that naturally sit lighter around the face anyway, the effect reads as sun rather than salon.
Who it does not suit
If you want a bright, high-contrast blonde, air touch will underdeliver. It is a subtle technique by design, and asking it to produce dramatic lightness means working against what it is for. Full highlights from $250 get you there more directly.
Very short hair is also a poor fit — there needs to be enough length for the air to separate short from long. And if your hair carries a lot of previous colour, that has to be dealt with first; see colour correction.
What to expect on the day
It is a longer appointment than most colour services, because the air separation happens section by section and cannot be rushed. Come with clean, dry, unstyled hair — product and heat styling both interfere with how the strands separate.
As with every colour service here, a consultation is included before anything starts, and you will have an exact price before it does.
