Long sleek dark hair with a mirror finish after a keratin treatment at Neelo Luxe Studio

A Mississauga July is a stress test for smoothed hair. We sit on the lake, which means humidity that lingers well past sunset, and humidity is precisely what a keratin treatment is fighting.

Keratin treatments start at $250 at Neelo Luxe Studio. How long yours lasts depends less on the treatment than on what you do in the weeks afterwards — and the single biggest factor is what is in your shampoo.

Why humidity is the enemy

Frizz is not random. Hair is porous, and on a humid day it absorbs moisture from the air. As individual strands take on water they swell unevenly, the cuticle lifts, and hair that lay flat this morning is doing something else by lunchtime.

A keratin treatment works by smoothing the cuticle and filling gaps in the hair’s surface, so there is less for moisture to get into. Living near the lake does not stop it working — it just means the protective layer is asked to do more, for longer.

Sulphates are what shorten it

If you take one thing from this page, this is it.

Sulphates strip the treatment out. Sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate are aggressive detergents, and every wash with them removes some of what you paid for. Switching to a sulphate-free shampoo is not an upsell — it is the difference between a treatment that lasts months and one that fades in weeks.

Check the ingredients on what you already own. Plenty of shampoos marketed as gentle still list a sulphate in the first few lines.

Salt and chlorine

Both are harsh on smoothed hair, and summer is when you meet the most of them. You do not have to avoid swimming — you have to avoid letting your hair sit in it.

Wet your hair with clean water before you get in. Saturated hair absorbs far less pool or lake water than dry hair does. Rinse thoroughly afterwards rather than waiting until you are home.

Wash less, and cooler

Every wash costs you a little of the treatment, so stretching from daily to every second or third day meaningfully extends it. Dry shampoo is genuinely useful here.

Hot water lifts the cuticle, which is the opposite of what a smoothing treatment is trying to achieve. Wash in warm rather than hot, and give it a cool rinse at the end.

Sun, and the thing nobody mentions

UV degrades the treatment and, if your hair is coloured, pulls the tone warm at the same time. A hat on the dock is doing two jobs.

The one people forget: sweat. Salt from your own scalp behaves like any other salt. After a hot day or a workout, rinse — even without shampoo.

Timing it around colour

If you are having both, the order matters and it is worth planning in one conversation rather than booking blind. Colour and keratin interact, and the right sequence depends on what you are having done and the condition your hair is in.

That is part of what the treatments consultation covers — we look at your hair condition, your routine and your expectations before recommending anything. If you are also thinking about colour, mention it at the same time.

Realistic expectations

A keratin treatment reduces frizz, smooths the hair and makes it far more manageable. It is not permanent straightening, and it does not behave identically on every head — texture, porosity and colour history all change the result.

Followed properly, our clients typically get around six months from a treatment. That figure assumes the aftercare above is actually kept to — sulphate-free shampoo especially. Ignore that and the same treatment can fade in a fraction of the time, which is why the guidance is not fussiness.

What it reliably buys you is a much shorter relationship with your hairdryer, which through a Mississauga summer is worth a great deal.
